Cognitive Medical Systems Announces Participation in OMG Healthcare Ordering Service RFP

December 17, 2015

Cognitive Medical Systems, a specialist in standards-based clinical decision support software and healthcare IT infrastructure, announced today that the Object Management Group® (OMG®) has released a Request for Proposal (RFP) for a Healthcare Ordering Service. Cognitive championed the RFP proposal request at OMG’s most recent Technical Meeting in San Diego. The RFP calls for candidate implementation specifications and is the next step in evolving the HL7 Ordering Service Interface functional model into a normative standard.

The electronic health standards community, including Cognitive Medical Systems, will have until November 7, 2016 to respond with a technical implementation specification, which will be voted on by OMG member organizations.

OMG specifications build upon HL7 functional models by soliciting from the community a technology-neutral, platform-independent model, at least one platform-specific model, and a reference implementation that demonstrates the feasibility of the proposed standard.

“As an industry, we are moving beyond standalone, proprietary stove-piped systems,” said Cognitive Medical Systems President Douglas W. Burke. “Service specifications are a critical next step in the evolution of HL7 service functional models towards the eventual commercial adoption of standards-based solutions.”

The original Ordering Service Interface specification is one of three HL7 Draft Standards for Trial Use (DSTU) successfully balloted by Cognitive Medical Systems.

OMG is an international, open membership, not-for-profit technology standards consortium, founded in 1989. Founded in 1987, HL7 is a not-for-profit, ANSI-accredited standards developing organization dedicated to providing a comprehensive framework and related standards for the exchange, integration, sharing, and retrieval of electronic health information.
