Cognitive Medical Systems Names Retired U.S. Air Force Colonel Chief Medical Informatics Officer

SAN DIEGO – January 9, 2015 – Cognitive Medical Systems, a specialist in standards-based Clinical Decision Support (CDS) software and healthcare IT infrastructure, today announced its new Chief Medical Informatics Officer, Rocky Reston, M.D., Ph.D.
Dr. Reston’s 30 years of expertise covers healthcare, clinical informatics and information systems infrastructure for a variety of organizations, most recently as the CMIO for the University of Louisville Physicians (ULP).

As CMIO for the University of Louisville Physicians, Reston worked with the CIO, hospital leadership, workforce and other administrators to effectively integrate the electronic health record and other IT systems throughout the institution. He also developed and analyzed data to identify mechanisms for improving IT functions in all areas of the organization. Prior to his work with the University of Louisville, Reston was the Chief of Clinical Information Research and Requirements with the Office of the U.S. Secretary of Defense and the CMIO for the Military Health System Cyberinfrastructure Services.

Reston is a retired U.S. Air Force Colonel, board certified in clinical informatics and anesthesiology. He received his doctorate in medicine from the Uniformed Services University’s F. Edward Hebert School of Medicine in Bethesda, Maryland. Reston also holds a Ph.D. in Solid State Physics, Electromagnetics and Biosensors from the U.S. Air Force Institute of Technology and a Bachelor of Science in Electrical Engineering from the U.S. Air Force Academy.
