Top Healthcare Information Association Adopts Cognitive Medical Systems’ Data Exchange Standards
The standards address requirements in the areas of Unified Communications, Ordering and Event Publication and Subscription.
Health Level 7 International (HL7) represents more than 90 percent of the information systems vendors serving healthcare and is comprised of more than 2,300 members.
“Clinical Decision Support systems endeavor to help automate both decision making and workflow orchestration,” said Emory Fry, MD, Chief Medical Informatics Officer at Cognitive Medical Systems. “To be effective, CDS products should have access to real-time event data, be able to create and manage orders and can leverage modern communication methods (email, SMS, Voice-Over-IP, etc.) to notify providers of recommendations. Cognitive was tasked by the U.S. Veterans Administration to develop standards for services in these important areas, and we’re proud that HL7 approved them as Draft Standards for Trial Utilization (DSTU).”
CDS systems must often rely on data polling techniques and non-standard point-to-point interfaces that are inherently inefficient and non-scalable. Costs associated with establishing and maintaining tightly coupled, custom interfaces can be a significant. There are also significant opportunity costs and patient safety concerns when CDS recommendations cannot be effectively communicated to the increasingly mobile healthcare workforce. The effort to create Service Standards was set up to develop the framework for a solution to these sizeable healthcare issues.
